  • When do I see the results?

The results are cumulative, so each session you will see a further reduction in hair re-growth. After your first session you will notice the hair will shed off in a few days, leaving it smooth.

Since each hair follicle may be in a different growth stage, you will see some hair return after a few weeks. You will be ready then for your next session, to target the other hairs that are in different growth cycles. It is key to time your appointments correctly and on schedule.

  • Is laser hair removal permanent?

We like to refer to treatments as “permanent hair reduction”. You will never be able to remove 100% of the hairs in the treated area, but you will see a significant amount of reduction and very slow regrowth, if any. Most patients will need a “touch-up” session once or twice a year to maintain carefree results.

It is important to remember that results are based on the type of skin and hair that you have, along with the skill of the laser technician you have.

  • Does it work for everyone?

Laser hair works by emitting light within a specific wavelength that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair, which damages the follicle enough to stop future growth. With that being said, treatments do not work on hair that is grey, very blonde or red in colour, due to the lack of melanin within the hair follicle.

  • How is laser hair removal different from other methods of hair reduction?

Laser Hair removal works on the basis of targeting light to the pigment contained within the hair. For patients that have grey, blonde or red hair electrolysis may be the better option.

  • Why can I only shave before my sessions?

The laser works by targeting the darker pigmentation of the hair in the hair follicle. If you wax prior to or in between laser treatments, you are removing the hair from the root and not allowing the laser to target any specific area.

  • Does laser hair removal hurt?

There are certain areas of the body that are more sensitive than others, for example the bikini, thus these areas will be a bit uncomfortable during the treatment. A topical numbing cream can be applied before. Most other areas of the body are quite tolerable during treatments.

To help reduce any discomfort you can try shaving closer to your appointment time, the less hair on the surface, the less discomfort you will feel. Also for females, if you are your menstrual cycle this increases your sensitivity to pain in general. So booking an appointment when you are not on your period will help.

  • How long will a session take?

The time of each session depends on how large the surface area to be treated is. For tiny areas on the body, such as the upper lip or chin, sessions can be done in a matter of minutes. For larger areas such as the full back or legs, this can take up to one hour. For patients that decide to treat their full body this can take from 2-3 hours.

  • Can I get laser hair removal on my genital area?

Yes, you can have a full Brazilian laser treatment. People who are skeptical of this feel this way because it is a very personal and delicate area. However, it is safe to have treatments in your genital area.

  • Which skin types are most suitable?

The SP Dynamis Nd:YAG Laser used at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic is suitable for the broadest range of skin types. Unlike other types of lasers, the SP Dynamis Laser does not damage the skin because of its ability to emit light slowly. Whether pale with fair hair or dark skinned with dark hair, this laser hair removal device will work for you.

  • Are there any side effects?

Side effects of treatments may include redness and irritation in the treatment area that typically subside within a couple days. A cool gel or cream along with an application of a cold compress can alleviate this.

  • Are there any risks?

Since laser hair removal is non-invasive there are very minimal risks. Risks occur when you do not properly follow the pre and post-procedure instructions. In these cases, the risk to scarring, burning and pigment changes are increased.

  • At what age can I start having treatments?

As long as parental consent is given, treatments can be performed on people 18 years or younger. There are no studies proving that laser hair removal is harmful in the long term and any unwanted side effects are only minor and temporary.
